HOPE videos available
Someone has been kind enough to put up a bittorrent tracker of videos that were made at the Last HOPE conference last weekend. Not all the talks are up yet so check back every so often.
Back - Updated with more photos
I have returned from the R4nger5 meet that took place over the weekend. Five folk including me showed up: V and Graafen (the organisers), Pippa and Jonathan. Had a pretty good time. Gathered wood, had a barbecue, split wood with an axe, played with various fire starting methods and music was played. I even had a few goes on V’s didgeredoo. Need more practice at that, managed to get about 20 seconds of droning over the course of 2 days.
There was also much hilarity. V is a really funny guy, we were all laughing pretty regularly at his jokes. More fun was had when a discarded chair was found and I sat in it only to discover the reason why it was discarded. The plastic weave on the bottom had ripped off at one side and I went straight through. Photos were taken, will try and grab them off the folk who took them. I did have my revenge when I got out some paracord and made a makeshift fix. Paracord is handy stuff, carry some around.
All of my photos are available on Flickr.
Offline
I’m off to the R4nger5 meet. Probably won’t be online much, if at all. Consider me unreachable unless you have my phone number or send me a direct message on twitter. I might be online via my phone but it is unlikely.
I’ll try and document things but no promises. Will be back on Monday at some point.
Anyone want to chat?
Turns out I have a Yahoo messenger account. Makes sense seeing as I had to sign up to Yahoo to get Flickr. That brings up the instant messenger networks up to 4. So, if you feel like talking to a random geek with survivalist tendencies, you can reach me at:

Vim
During my time in Linux I have mainly used Nano as my choice of text editor because it was the simplest to wrap my n00b head around, commands listed at the bottom of the screen were very useful. I heard about Vim a few years and gave it a shot. Results were “WTF?! How do i close this? How do I save?” resulting in me closing the terminal window, losing the changes and reverting back to Nano.
Having grown older (and hopefully wiser) over the years, I took another shot at learning Vim. The first tutorial I found was made up from an irc conversation and not particularly good. The one I found this morning is so much better. It should be present on any machine that has Vim installed. Just bring up a terminal and type vimtutor. All the instructions are in the text file that is loaded and you edit the file itself (vimtutor makes a copy of the original so its not overwritten).
Having more or less completed the tutorial, I can see the benefits of using Vim. I suggest trying it, even if only to get a feel for how it works.
Freedomain Radio
Go listen to Freedomain Radio. Lots of potentially interesting (not listened to it all) media regarding philosophy, stateless society and liberty. Might not be to everyone’s tastes but is definitely more interesting than the crap on the idiot box.
Singstar
Was at a housewarming party last night. Usual party stuff, including guitar hero. After folk got bored of guitars and were sufficiently drunk, Singstar was brought out. Much laughter was had and there was a very scarily well done version of Aqua’s Barbie Girl. Ross can match the male singer pretty much perfectly and won the game.
After that, Louise and I had a go at singing Evanescence’s Bring Me To Life which never worked as planned. More importantly, there was video of the event. Yes, I’m putting footage of me drunkenly singing on the internet.
