In case you were wondering…

…My new laptop has arrived in one peice. No problems at all. The carrier at the end of the day was UkMail, thankfully not a shady white van.

Laptop is bigger than I expected but thats probably due to my crap estimation of size. Everything just works, webcam, wifi, sound, even the media buttons that are at the top of the keyboard. The Ubuntu folk have done a great job with this.

Copying over my documents and settings was a breeze, just select all the files and folders I want (remembering the hidden files), copy and paste then reboot once all the patching was done. Easy as pie.

This was definatly a good choice of laptop.

Still waiting

EDIT: This entry seems to be getting a fair amount of attention. My laptop did arrive a few days later if I recall. Tracking info was pretty much non existant.

Laptop is still not here. The tracking is somewhat cryptic and I have no idea where it is.

Date Time Location Activity
26/08/08 10:05 PLAN COMMITTED NOTE.
25/08/08 11:16 MR. KEVIN SMITH 28/08/08 SCHEDULED DELIVERY DATE.
24/08/08 14:00 RAHEEN DEPARTED EMF.
24/08/08 12:17 ISLAND DELIVERY.

I’m slightly worried about one of the entries. Apparently the delivery date has been set but they were supposed to call me to ask when it is convenient. Also, what does “plan committed” mean? What plan?

There are also some bad experiences with the courier that Dell use to ship stuff in the UK. Aparrently Walsh Western subcontract the deliveries to other couriers so I have no idea what van to look out for.

Call me paranoid but when you have spent a fair bit of money you want to know where your purchace is and negative reviews aren’t comforting.

Laptop is on its way!

New laptop

Just ordered a new laptop from Dell. Yes, yet another computer will be in my possesion soon.

I’m getting an XPS m1330 with the following specs:

  • 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 2Gb RAM
  • 160Gb hard disk
  • 9 Cell battery

And comes with Ubuntu preinstalled! Win!

I’m getting a new laptop to use as my main deck for a few reasons. My curent mobile deck (an eeepc) is too underpowered and lacks storage space though it will be used as a kicking about laptop and as the main processor in my robot that I plan to build. I do all my work on my desktop and it is a pain in the ass to transfer data between machines when going back and forward to uni. One machine is preferable to house all my stuff on.

Expect a review in the next fortnight or so.
