The train is a good way to see things. I forgot about that option.

As much fun as California would be, I doubt the heat would be good. Spontaneous combustion would be in my future methinks.

Temperate areas would be more suited to me, though I do have a hankering to go to Burning Man.

I do want to see the mountains, summer would give me more time to save up which is a good thing.

Fly to Seattle. Train to California.

That's what I would do if you wanted to visit both those places. Of course, I think Cascadia > California. And long train trips are fun. You'd get to travel almost the whole Amtrak Cascades route, which I think is some of the prettiest track in the country. Maybe you could fly out of SF so you don't have to journey back up north to Seatac to get home. Though I suppose that you could do the whole thing in reverse -- fly into SF, kick around California, train up to Seattle, do your thing up here, fly out of Seatac.

If you want to get up high in the Cascades and really see the mountains, later is better. They don't thaw out till early-to-mid summer.
