Somehow it slipped out while using the annex (further dissuading me from using it) and the tension caused the tip to pierce the silnylon. That was how I had it. That's what the two hypalon patches on the underside of the tarp are for. Your poles shouldn't be able to pierce that. I always pitch my paratarp with the tip of the hiking poles up.
