Pillows
At home, I have a very nice (if a tad too large) memory foam pillow. This makes for very comfy sleeps. However, it is very impractical to bring such an object into the wilderness, thus a substitute needs to be found.
So far, I have tried many different objects to rest my head on: clothing “footballs” (see Patrolling s1e08 AWOL bag segment); cheap inflatable pillow and tried a camelbak last night. None of these provide the amount of support I am used to. Maybe I’m being too picky but I do find it affects my sleep while camping (wake up far too often, take ages to nod off and I always wake up far too early) so it is something I want to get sorted asap.
Suggestions?
Tempur do a travel memory foam pillow: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tempur-Travel-Memory-Pillow-GUARANTEED/dp/B000X8O7YY
£44, ouch! Though if it works it will be worth it.
Cheers!
That’s interesting and it’s going to my to-do list. Being the hobo that I am, I don’t have that home / camping gear distinction that most sane people have. So I tend to go for bleeding edge stuff; Recently bought an Eurohike pillow and I’m happy with it; mostly because I haven’t got travel pillow before.
Wow, a memory foam pillow?? I’m jealous. I do have a memory foam mattress though, so I guess I can’t complain
Best ergonomics ever..
I just use a stuff sack with spare clothes.
Tried that as well, didn’t work well for me. Maybe I’m just a pussy when it comes to sleep in the bush.
I think a Friends episode once suggested an inflatable sheep which was originally part of a Bo-Peep Halloween costume
You have a sleeping mat?
I do have a mat, a Gelert Hiker self inflating one. Pretty comfy in my opinion.
Psh, you don’t need to bring a pillow. A fleece folded up makes a good alternative.
I slept on a roof top out in the Iraqi heat for over a month and used a Camelback M.U.L.E. as a pillow. Surprisingly enough, I was so tired each day that despite all the mosquitoes and other insects, I managed to get some sleep in.
